Bob Gerhett on his visit.
We were sad to hear that our friend Bob Gehrett from Gettysburg, U.S.A. passed away yesterday, the 2nd of February.
Bob was a member of the US 101st Airborne troops during WW2 and prior to D-Day was stationed near Hungerford in Berkshire. On D-Day Bob parachuted into France, landing near Sainte-Mere-Eglise then going on to fight through to the end of the war, at one time fighting alongside the famous 'Band of Brothers' during the Battle of the Bulge.
We had the honour of meeting Bob, and his daughter Betty, when he returned here for a visit in May 2011. It was a pleasure to spend the day with them as they were taken, in a small convoy of wartime vehicles, on a tour of the places Bob knew during his time here during the war.
We shall miss him, when these men go they take something with them that cannot be replaced. He was a modest man who span great tales of his time here and in France without the hint of a boast and we feel proud to have shared a little of his life. Our thoughts, love and best wishes go out to Betty at this sad time.
R.I.P Sgt Bob Gehrett, in our hearts you will always be a Hero.
